Cropsey, Jasper Francis

American painter and architect, associated as a painter with the Hudson River school. Cropsey studied in Europe in 1847-50, returning there in 1857-63 and living mainly in London. He returned to America a skilled watercolorist, in 1866 helped found the American Watercolor Society, and became known for his fine, naturalistic and light-filled landscapes.
