Landseer, Sir Edwin

British painter and sculptor best known for his paintings of animals.
Sir Edwin Landseer learned drawing from his father, an engraver and writer, and also studied at the Royal Academy. His oil paintings of animals were based on sound anatomical knowledge and, at first, were marked by healthy animation. Sir Edwin Landseer's later works were marred, however, by anthropomorphism that lapsed into sentimentality. Landseer was elected to the RoyalAcademy (1831) and knighted (1850). Sir Edwin Landseer executed the four bronze lions at the base of the Nelson monument in Trafalgar Square, London, in 1867. Less well known are his small oil sketches and his drawings, which are his finest artwork.
