Levitan, Isaac

Isaac Levitan is one of the greatest and landscape painters among the group of Russian artists known as the Itinerants. Although his art is less epic than Shishkin's, his style ans subject matter are more varied. Levitan, like Shishkin, was a supreme master of the use of color, composition, and light and shade. Unlike Shishkin, who had a preference for summer landscapes, Levitan preferred the fresh colors of spring and the muted cadences of autumn.
