Bellows, George Biography

American realist painter of the Ashcan school. His vigorous, unflinching but mostly cheerful urban genre scenes drew wide interest, meeting a concern for social issues that faded after the First World War.

George Bellows was born in Columbus, Ohio, and educated at Ohio State University. He studied with the realist painter Robert Henri, who strongly influenced him, and later taught in New York City and Chicago. Bellows's early artwork, in a vigorous style, chiefly depicted scenes of urban life and often the world of boxing, such as his most famous oil painting, Stag at Sharkey's (1909, Cleveland Museum of Art). He received rapid recognition, becoming an unusually young member of the National Academy of Design in 1913.
