 Welcome to the Joy of Art masterclass with Bohemian artist Joy
This month Joy is going to show us how to paint a Fine Art reproduction of Botticelli’s magnificent Birth of Venus. As this is a complex piece and you are just beginners, we are going to concentrate on just the central figure of Venus in this lesson.
 1.Draw the outline of
the main figures
on to the canvas.
 2. With a sable brush
give the canvas a thin wash
of yellow ochre paint.
 3. Tint the sky with a wash
of Prussian blue and the sea
with sap green.
 4. Work the mixture of Prussian blue,
white with a little of Payne’s grey with cobalt blue
across the sky, smoothly brushing from left to right.
5. The hair requires a thin underlay of cadmium yellow
and white before the strands can be illustrated
using burnt sienna.
6. Define the floating flowers using crimson,
cadmium yellow, white and burnt sienna on the flowers;
yellow ochre, burnt umber and black for the landscape;
and white for the waves.
