Homer, Winslow

1836-1910

Homer, Winslow

American painter, trained as an illustrator. His first oil paintings were deliberatively naturalistic and illustrational, but after a visit to Paris in 1867, where he saw Manet's broad manner of painting, his style became fresher and more vivid. Winslow Homer's paintings, in oils or watercolor, are of contemporary life, notably that of seafarers, encouraged by some months on the north-east coast of England, and re-enforced by his subsequent years on the coast of Maine.
