Kalf, Willem

Kalf, Willem

Dutch painter, who specialized in still lifes set against a dark background. His artworks typically feature arrangements of glassware, polished metalwork, decorated porcelain, and fine carpets, with the occasional half-peeled lemon (a Dutch still-life motif).
Willem Kalf's oil paintings, some of the finest Dutch still lifes, are luxurious but never gaudy. His sensitivity to the fall of light on objects and his ability to suggest texture may in part be due to the influence of Dutch painter Jan Vermeer.
