Marsh, Reginald

1898-1954

Marsh, Reginald

American painter, born in Paris into a family of well-to-do painters ,whose pictures of the raffish aspects of New York City life have a Hogarthian liveliness. Reginald Marsh's works, for all their slapdash exuberance and piled-on detail, are skillfully composed and carefully drawn. After working as a magazine illustrator in the 1920s, Reginald Marsh went on to paint his most characteristic work-street scenes, crowds, and honky-tonks particularly of the Bowery district and Coney Island in New York.
