Whistler, James Abbot McNeil

American-born painter and graphic artist, active mainly in England. Whistler was in pursuit of pure visual poetry. Outdoors his subjects were twilight and night scenes, inviting dramatic simplification - he called them 'nocturnes'. Whistler's paintings are related to Impressionism (although he was more interested in evoking a mood than in accurately depicting the effects of light), to Symbolism, and to Aestheticism, and he played a central role in the modern movement in England.
